Most listings count the same building three times. Dolce Vita became La Vie, La Vie became Plaza Madeira — one address, three names, and two of them still circulating. Here is what actually trades, where it is, and which bus stops outside.
Four are worth naming. Three are full shopping centres; the fourth is where people who live in Funchal do the weekly shop.
The one most visitors end up in, because it sits in the middle of the Estrada Monumental hotel strip and you can walk to it from most of them. Free underground parking, a cinema, and a 450-seat terrace that makes it the island’s default wet-afternoon plan.
The biggest, and the awkward one. It is up in the hills above the city — not in Santa Cruz, which is widely printed and wrong — so it is a bus or a taxi rather than a walk. Around a hundred stores, a hypermarket and a seven-screen cinema, with about a thousand free spaces.
Downtown, beside the Teatro Municipal, and the only one you can reach on foot from the cruise berth. Smaller than the other two and more useful for it: a supermarket, a gym and a food court in the middle of town rather than a trip out.
Not a mall so much as a hypermarket with shops attached, right next to the Mercado dos Lavradores. It opens at half past seven, which none of the others do, and it is where the old town actually buys its groceries.
This is the part worth reading. Travel sites still print these, and one of them is actively harmful: dolcevita.pt is live, returns a normal page, and is an online casino. It has nothing to do with the shopping centre whose name it carries, and we do not link it.
Eden Mar, Galerias São Lourenço and the arcade in the Monumental hotel building appear on lists of Madeiran shopping centres. They are small galleries and hotel podiums — a handful of units, no anchor store. Worth a look if you are passing; not worth a journey.
