Câmara de Lobos

The working fishing bay ten minutes from Funchal: where poncha actually comes from, what Cabo Girão really costs, and two live cameras over the harbour.

A working fishing harbour ten minutes west of Funchal — the bay Churchill painted, and the boats in it still go out. The cliff above is Cabo Girão, the only viewpoint on Madeira that charges anything at all: €5, set by regional portaria rather than by the town, which is the detail most listings get wrong. The town’s own beach opens on 1 May, the earliest staffed beach anywhere on the south coast.

Live right now

These are live cameras, not photographs. They start on their own as you reach them.

Looking down over Câmara de Lobos and the bay. Shows whether the coastal cloud is sitting below you, which is the inversion question.

The cameras are hosted on YouTube, so opening this page contacts Google. Nothing else on the page does.

What is here

Each of these is a page on this site about something in this area. The line under it is why you would go, not what the page is called.

  • Poncha, and what is actually in it

The drink is from here — although Santo António, the bar everyone means, is up in Estreito de Câmara de Lobos, a different parish from the seafront.

  • What the viewpoints charge

Cabo Girão is the one viewpoint on the island with a published tariff. The page carries the portaria, the exemptions, and the price history that explains why everybody quotes a different number.

  • Madeira’s beaches

Praia do Vigário is pebble, free, and staffed from 1 May, earlier than anything else on this coast — and it holds no Blue Flag, which is not the same as having failed one.

On film

No commentary, no music and no price quoted — which is deliberate, because the price has changed twice in thirteen months and any figure spoken aloud would date the video.

Getting there

Ten minutes west of Funchal on the coast road, with Cabo Girão above the town rather than in it. This site publishes bus numbers only for the four destinations it checked against the operator’s own guides, and this is not one of them.
