When the airside shop actually opens
Two first-party sources, two answers, two hours apart. Neither is obviously stale. We publish both rather than choose.
The correction
Madeira is inside the EU for tax purposes
The European Commission publishes a table of exactly this: which territories are in the EU, and which of them sit outside the customs, VAT or excise rules. Madeira is inside all three.

The Canary Islands row is why this is worth showing rather than asserting. That exception is real — the Canaries genuinely sit outside the EU VAT and excise territories — and it appears in the same table, from the same authority, as Madeira sitting inside them. So the question is not whether such places exist. It is that Madeira is not one, and the shop sign implies otherwise.
We give no allowances on this page — not one figure, for any traveller, in any direction. They depend on where you live, where you are going and why, and a wrong number would hurt you at a customs desk rather than on a website. The official sources are linked below; read them, or ask the airline.
And yet it is still cheaper
Cheaper is not the same as untaxed
Madeira sets its own reduced VAT rates under Article 18(3), Código do IVA, lower than mainland Portugal.
And Council Decision (EU) 2020/1790 lets Portugal apply reduced excise to alcohol produced in Madeira, until the end of 2027. Note the limit: produced in Madeira, not merely sold there.
So a bottle really can cost less here — for reasons that have nothing to do with the words on the shop front. That gap between “cheaper” and “duty free” is the whole of what the branding is doing.
The hand-luggage problem
Buying in town and collecting after security
Wine is a liquid, so a bottle bought in Funchal cannot go through security in your cabin bag. There is a route around this, and it is worth knowing before you buy.
Blandy’s Wine Lodge has a partnership with the Portfolio shop, which is airside at Madeira airport — the airport’s own site confirms it is past security. Bottles bought at the Lodge are collected there and carried on board as hand luggage.
It applies only to bottles bought at their Wine Lodge in Funchal. It is not a general service for wine bought anywhere on the island.
The opening time is disputed between two first-party sources. Blandy’s says the shop opens at 05:30; the airport operator’s own page for the same shop says 07:30.
That disagreement lands exactly where it matters. An early departure is the case this service is most useful for, and it is the case nobody can confirm. If your flight is before the later of those two times, confirm directly with the Lodge before you rely on it.

Nothing is published about how far ahead you must buy, or whether a minimum purchase applies. If you are buying on the day you fly, ask.
Exactly where the shop is
Blandy’s describes it as just past the main Duty Free shop. The airport confirms only that it is after security, not its position relative to anything else.
