What this site collects, and what it does not

Short version: no accounts, no advertising and no sale of personal data. Optional Google Analytics loads only after you allow it. Your browser also contacts the organisations that provide weather, video and map data; the details are set out below.

What we do not collect

None of the following exists on this site, either on the pages or behind them.

  • No accounts, sign-ups or passwords.
  • No advertising, ad networks or profiling.
  • No payment details — every booking and payment happens on somebody else’s site.
  • No newsletter list, and no email address is ever asked for.
  • No name, address or contact details of any kind.
  • No analytics before you make an affirmative choice.

Who your browser contacts

This is a static site with no server of our own, so the pages fetch what they need directly from the organisations that publish it. Each request carries your IP address and browser type to that organisation, in the same way as visiting their own website would. We receive none of it.

  • MadeiraSunOnly on pages that use it

    madeirasun.com

Provides the interactive 3D forecast preview on the Weather page. Your browser contacts madeirasun.com automatically when it loads the preview, which may be deferred until you scroll near it. The preview also requests forecasts from api.open-meteo.com. These requests send your IP address and browser details to the services; the preview does not request your device location. MadeiraSun currently has no separate privacy-policy page; the link opens its site and sources.

  • OpenFreeMap (Hyperknot Software Kft.)Only on pages that use it

    tiles.openfreemap.org

Draws the explorer’s basemap and labels when you open Explore Madeira or expand a map inside a guide. An unopened guide preview makes no request to this provider.

  • MapterhornOnly on pages that use it

    tiles.mapterhorn.com

Supplies the explorer’s elevation and hillshade tiles when you open the explorer or expand a guide map. Requests include your IP address and technical request details; the provider currently retains these for up to 30 days. The map does not request your device location.

  • Google Ireland LimitedOnly after analytics consent

    www.googletagmanager.com, www.google-analytics.com

Counts page views, engagement, scrolls and selected link or search interactions so we can judge which guides are useful and whether the site merits further investment. It loads only after you allow analytics. Advertising storage, Google Signals and ad personalisation are disabled; search terms, form values and precise location are not sent.

  • Cloudflare, Inc.Every page

    madeiracentral.com

Hosts and delivers the site. Every request reaches Cloudflare before it reaches anything of ours.

  • Cloudflare AI SearchOnly when you ask for it

    49c22062-ce3d-4ef5-8085-1cb45d1549b1.search.ai.cloudflare.com

Runs Cloudflare AI Search as you type a question in AI mode. The query, your IP address and browser details go to Cloudflare so it can return matches from MadeiraCentral. The ordinary site-search mode stays in your browser.

  • Norwegian Meteorological InstituteEvery page

    api.met.no

Publishes the Madeira airport report and forecast used by the island-status rail on every page and by the full landing outlook.

  • Open-MeteoOnly on pages that use it

    api.open-meteo.com

Publishes the mountain and coast forecasts.

  • Portal NetmadeiraOnly when you ask for it

    stream.madeirawebcams.com

Serves selected live cameras on the webcam directory. Nothing is requested from this host until you choose one of its cameras.

Their privacy policy (opens in a new tab)
  • Instituto Português do Mar e da AtmosferaEvery page

    api.ipma.pt

The Portuguese meteorological service. Its official Madeira warnings feed the island-status rail on every page.

  • Google Ireland LimitedOnly on pages that use it

    i.ytimg.com, www.youtube-nocookie.com

Serves the still images on embedded videos, which load from Google when the page opens. Many pages also carry live cameras, which are YouTube streams and start playing by themselves as you scroll to them — so Google is contacted on those pages whether or not you watch. Recorded videos still wait for you to press play.

  • OpenStreetMap FoundationOnly when you ask for it

    www.openstreetmap.org, tile.openstreetmap.org

Draws the embedded maps. Nothing is requested from OpenStreetMap until you choose to show a map — the placeholder before that is drawn by this site. Chosen over Google Maps, which sets identifying cookies and offers no cookie-free version.

What is kept on your device

Small preferences are stored in your browser so the site remembers your choices. Their stored contents are not sent by MadeiraCentral, and clearing your browser data removes them.

madeiracentral-theme
Whether you chose the light or dark theme.
madeiracentral-language
Which of the four languages you last used.
madeiracentral-cameras
Whether you left the live cameras open or closed.
madeiracentral-analytics-consent
Whether you allowed or refused optional analytics.
madeiracentral-home-v1
Your saved outing IDs, saved practical page IDs, visitor or resident focus, and transport preference. No name, precise location or travel dates are stored. Edit or reset these choices in Your Madeira on the homepage. With analytics consent, save and remove actions can be counted using the bounded outing or page ID; your focus and transport preference are not sent.

Analytics

Google Analytics is optional. Before a choice, and after a refusal, no Google Analytics script or request is loaded. If you allow it, Google Analytics uses cookies to distinguish visits and measures pages, engagement time, scrolls and bounded actions such as outbound-link categories. It does not receive search terms, names, email addresses, form values or precise location from this site. You can change your choice through “Analytics choices” in the footer.

The site links out to official Madeira services, transport operators and a small number of commercial partners. Some of those links earn a commission, and every one of them is labelled where it appears. Following a link takes you to somebody else’s site under somebody else’s privacy policy; nothing about you is passed along beyond the fact that you arrived from here.

Your rights

Under the GDPR you have rights over personal data an organisation holds about you. MadeiraCentral does not ask for your identity or contact details. If you allow analytics, Google processes pseudonymous usage data for the MadeiraCentral property; the organisations listed above also receive the network information needed to answer browser requests. Their policies are linked in the table.

  • Access — a copy of what is held about you.
  • Rectification — correction of anything wrong.
  • Erasure — deletion of what is held.
  • Objection — an end to processing you did not ask for.
  • Portability — your data in a form you can take elsewhere.
  • Complaint — you may complain to your national data protection authority.

Children

The site is a planning tool for travel and everyday life in Madeira. It is not aimed at children and does not ask for a child’s name, contact details or account.

Changes to this page

If what the site does changes, this page changes with it and the date above moves. There is no archive of previous versions; the page history is public in the site’s source repository.
