The answer
Fruit by the kilo: read the €/kg sign. What the 2026 inspection found.
Fruit here is sold by weight. Read the €/kg sign, watch the reading on the scale, and work out the total before you pay — then ask for the invoice.
What it is
Funchal’s main municipal market, on the edge of the old town and a short walk from Rua de Santa Maria. The council publishes its own site with the market’s hours and stalls, linked below.
Buying fruit without overpaying
Portuguese businesses must issue an invoice for each sale or service. Use it to compare the item, quantity and price with the menu or display.
- Ask the business to explain or correct the specific line.
- Keep the menu photo, invoice, payment slip and relevant terminal screen.
- If unresolved, request the physical Livro de Reclamações or use the electronic complaints book.
- For further help in Madeira, contact the regional consumer arbitration centre.
A May 2026 ARAE inspection checked prices and weights at 30 Mercado dos Lavradores stalls and reported no infringement in those two areas; it did find complaints-book issues. That result covers that inspection, not every transaction on the island.
The operators, linked direct
Each of these sets its own fares and opening hours, and changes them. We link the operator rather than reprint a figure we have not checked ourselves.
