Where to park in Funchal

Choose a garage for the part of the city you want, then check vehicle height and the time you need to leave. Street spaces suit shorter stays and require closer attention to signs.

Published hours and tariffs can change, and road closures for events can block an otherwise open garage. A listed car park is never a promise that a space is available.

A covered garage beside the lower cable-car station and a short walk from Mercado dos Lavradores and Rua de Santa Maria.

Before you go: Maximum vehicle height is 1.95 m. The operator lists a lift and reduced-mobility bays; public access runs later on Fridays, Saturdays and holiday eves than on other nights. Check the current hours and tariff before entering.

A covered central option inside Anadia Shopping, useful for the market and the main pedestrian shopping street.

Before you go: Maximum height is 1.95 m. The operator lists a lift and reduced-mobility bays and publishes daily opening and closing times, including specific holiday closures. It is not an overnight-access choice.

Praça CR7

A central garage by the port, CR7 Museum and the western edge of downtown Funchal.

Before you go: Its published 2.10 m height limit is the largest of these four garages. The operator lists a lift and reduced-mobility bays; public access is 24 hours only on specified nights, so check your planned exit.

São Tiago

A useful eastern Old Town option near São Tiago Fort, Barreirinha and the far end of Rua de Santa Maria.

Before you go: Maximum height is 2.00 m and reduced-mobility bays are listed. The operator’s separate 24-hour wording applies to a fleet and rental-car floor, not ordinary public parking; use the published public opening times.

On-street parking

Surface spaces can work for a brief errand, but payment and permission depend on the signs at the exact space.

Before you go: Check whether the space is paid or free. White spaces marked “M” are reserved for residents, and do not park on yellow lines. Where iParque is accepted, its Driver app can start and stop a paid parking session; otherwise follow the payment instructions at the space.

Check before driving into the centre

  • Match the garage to your destination

    Almirante Reis and São Tiago serve the Old Town; Anadia suits the market and Fernão de Ornelas; Praça CR7 sits by the port and west side of the centre.

  • Check height and exit time

    The published height limits differ, and ordinary public access is not always overnight. Open the operator page for the current schedule before entering.

  • Read temporary traffic notices

    Rallies, festivals and works can alter access independently of normal garage hours. Follow temporary signs and police instructions on the day.

  • Do not treat a map pin as availability

    None of these sources provides guaranteed live capacity. Keep a second garage in the same part of town.

Useful questions

Which garage is best for Funchal Old Town?

Almirante Reis is closest to the cable car and market side; São Tiago serves the eastern end near the fort and Barreirinha. Choose according to where you want to finish and keep the other as a backup.

Can I leave the car overnight?

Do not infer overnight access from a daily price cap. Several public schedules close for part of the night, and São Tiago’s 24-hour wording concerns a separate fleet area. Check the operator page for your date and exit time.

What should I check at a street space?

Read the sign to see whether parking is paid or free. White spaces marked “M” are reserved for residents, and yellow lines are not parking spaces. Street parking is first come, first served.
