Visiting the lodges

Madeira wine tasting, and what it actually costs

Four producers open their doors. Two publish prices, two do not, and only one of them lets you simply walk in.

Every figure read from the producer’s own site on July 26, 2026.

The one you can walk into

Henriques & Henriques states it plainly on its own booking page: parties of fewer than 6 do not need to book at all — just arrive during opening hours. That makes it the only one of the four that fits into a day you have not planned.

They describe the tasting only as being at “a token price”, and give no figure. We do not supply one either.

What the two that publish prices charge

Blandy’s Wine Lodge

Booking required
  • Lodge Tour30 min17.00
  • Premium Tour45 min23.00
  • Vintage Premium Tour90 min59.00
  • Private Tour (per person, max 4)60 min150.00

Vinhos Barbeito

Booking required
  • Gold tasting75 min18.00
  • Platinum tasting90 min33.00

Barbeito’s 2026 price list is an image-only PDF — it contains no extractable text at all, so it cannot be searched and a screen reader cannot read it. That is very likely why aggregators quote Barbeito inconsistently.

The two that publish nothing

H.M. Borges and Henriques & Henriques publish no prices at all. Aggregators quote figures for both. We do not repeat them, because an invented price on a page whose whole purpose is accuracy would be the worst kind of mistake.

  • H.M. Borges
  • Henriques & Henriques — Walk-ins accepted

Do not trust any published Blandy’s opening time

Blandy’s publishes its opening hours in three places on its own site and they disagree — notably on Sundays and public holidays. Its vineyard-tour page was still showing the previous year’s seasonal dates when we checked. We therefore publish none of them.

Its address is also given two ways: Blandy’s says Avenida Arriaga 28; the regional tourism board says Avenida Arriaga 48. We use the producer’s.

Two producers we cannot send you to

Madeira’s largest exporter and one long-established house both have websites that do not work — one returns a server error, the other is an untouched blank template. Neither is listed above, and this is why rather than an oversight.

Reading a label only gets you so far. The lodges pour across the sweetness range in one sitting, which is the fastest way to find out which variety you actually like.
