Make a practical plan

Plan your last day before an evening flight

Start with your airline’s deadline, decide where the bags will wait, and use only the time left after the return journey, bag collection, check-in, security and any passport control.

Before you go

No itinerary can make a flight safe. Airline instructions and live airport information take priority, and road, bus, queue and baggage-storage conditions can change during the day.

Build a short plan around your bags

Choose an area

Options: 6

Airport · Before security, ground floor · Paid per item

Leave bags at Madeira Airport

The airport operator lists an official left-luggage facility before security, useful when you want the bags already at the terminal.

Before you go: ANA lists round-the-clock opening, but does not guarantee space or advance booking on the page. Allow time to deposit and retrieve each item, keep the receipt, and confirm the service on the day.

Downtown or Old Town · Funchal · Paid by locker and duration

Use central Funchal lockers

Two self-service locations keep a city-centre plan compact: Travessa do Freitas for downtown or Rua dos Barreiros for the Old Town.

Before you go: The operator advertises 24/7 smartphone access and assigns a locker through booking. Check live capacity, size and access requirements before relying on it; collection or delivery service is only offered subject to availability.

Old Town · Funchal · Paid

Choose one indoor Funchal visit

Madeira Story Centre gives a compact, interactive introduction to the island and is easy to pair with a nearby meal.

Before you go: The tourism board describes about ninety minutes for the visit. Treat that as an indication, not a guaranteed duration, and leave early enough to collect bags and travel to the airport.

Port side · Funchal · Free

Santa Catarina Park and central Funchal

A flexible outdoor stop with a lawn, pond, playground and port view, close to the western side of the centre.

Before you go: This works when the weather is settled and you need an activity that is easy to shorten. Check seasonal gate hours; switch to a central indoor venue if the weather changes.

Machico · East Madeira · Free outdoors · museum admission check

A short stop in Machico

Use the old centre, promenade and Banda d’Além beach for a short outdoor stop, with Solar do Ribeirinho as a weekday indoor alternative.

Before you go: The beach is not an all-weather suggestion and staffed bathing dates are seasonal. Solar do Ribeirinho is mainly a weekday option. MadeiraBus information covers Machico, not a guaranteed connection to the airport; verify the onward journey separately.

Madeira Airport · Departures · Essential step

Return to the airport and check in

End the plan with enough unassigned time for baggage collection, the journey, airline procedures, security and any passport control.

Before you go: ANA’s general desk guidance varies by destination, while the airline’s minimum governs your booking. Check the live board, but do not use a displayed delay to cut the required arrival buffer.

Work backward from departure

  • Use the airline’s deadline

ANA publishes general check-in guidance, but your airline and booking determine the minimum that applies. Add time for bag drop, security and passport control where required.

  • Choose storage before the activity

Airport storage suits an east-side plan; central lockers suit Funchal. Include the deposit and collection journey rather than treating storage as an instant hand-off.

  • Check live operations again

Open the official departures board and airline app before the last stop and again before leaving for the terminal. A displayed delay is not permission to arrive after the airline deadline.

  • Keep the final stop compact

Avoid Porto Moniz, Santana and full walks on departure day. Choose one nearby activity and a weather backup instead of filling every remaining hour.

Useful questions

Should I store bags in Funchal or at the airport?

Use central lockers for a Funchal plan and airport left luggage for an east-side plan or when you want the bags already at the terminal. Compare the extra deposit and collection travel, not just the storage fee.

How early should I return to Madeira Airport?

Follow the minimum in your airline or booking first. ANA publishes broader guidance by destination, but you still need time for bag retrieval, travel, bag drop, security and passport control where applicable.

Can I trust a delayed departure time and stay out longer?

No. Monitor the airline and official board, but continue to meet the airline’s check-in and bag-drop deadlines unless the airline directly changes your instructions.
