The only genuinely natural sand beach on Madeira: dark grey-brown, Blue Flag, staffed — and with the shortest season of any flagged beach on the island.

The sand arrived by itself. On an island this young and this volcanic, that is the rare case.

A small cove east of Caniçal, below the road out to Ponta de São Lourenço. The portaria classes it as a limited-use beach, which is its way of saying the cove is small and fills up.

Blue Flag awarded for 2026.

The portaria classes it a “praia de uso limitado”: capacity or access is restricted.

What the state says about it

Annex IV of Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1 lists it as a designated bathing water, with a 2026 season running June 30, 2026 to September 27, 2026.

It appears in the “praia de banhos” column, which is how the annex records that assistance to bathers is assured.

Neither of those is our judgement. It is which column the beach appears in.
