Calheta beach

The first of Madeira’s two engineered beaches: imported sand held behind rock breakwaters, a Blue Flag, listed lifeguard service, and no entry charge.

The sand was shipped in and is held in place behind rock breakwaters.

Two pockets of pale sand on a coast made of black cobbles, and the calmest water on the south-west shore — because the breakwaters were built to make it so. It looks Caribbean in the photographs, and it was built to.

What the state says about it

Annex IV of Portaria n.º 204-A/2026/1 lists it as a designated bathing water, with a 2026 season running June 29, 2026 to September 30, 2026.

It appears in the “praia de banhos” column: lifeguard service is listed in the published documentation, not confirmed live.

Even where the documentation lists lifeguard service, this does not confirm a lifeguard is present when you visit. Always check on arrival.
